Fitting your cat with a collar is very much a personal preference. Collars do have benefits for cats that are allowed to roam. The collar can be fitted with an ID tag which will hopefully aid the safe return of a cat that gets lost. Also most collars are fitted with a small bell that can warn any birds that a cat is around. For cats that are allowed out when it is dark there are collars made from high visibility reflective material that are easier for car drivers to see.

Fitting the collar is very important. If it is too tight a cat will experince serious discomfort and if it is too slack it will fall off or easily be removed. Always follow the manufacturer instructions when fitting a collar.

It is important when selecting a collar to make sure it is a "safety collar". A safety collar has some form of release mechanism should it get caught on the branch of a tree. These mechanism are usually either an elasticated section in the collar which allows it to stretch or a plastic release clip which when pulled solidly it comes apart.

Cat harnesses tend to fit around the neck and body of the cat and are fitted with a lead. Harnesses are used for cats that are only allowed out under supervision and they work similar to a dog on a lead.

Cat of the Month
April & May 2014

Rocky - Cat of the Month for April 2014

(click on photo for larger image)

This is a picture of my beautiful Persian ‘Rocky’ who is 18 months old – he is a real livewire and constantly getting in to mischief but I love him dearly! I think he would make a great cat of the month.
